Tax Deducted at Source
Tax Deducted at Source is a mechanism where a person making specified payments (like salary, rent, or commission) must deduct a certain percentage of tax before paying the balance to the receiver, remitting the tax to the government.
Where it appears in practice
Applies when payments exceed specified thresholds, like <Verify>₹2,40,000</Verify> for rent under Section 194I. Deadlines apply for depositing the deducted amount.
A worked example
You pay ₹50,000 monthly rent. You deduct <Verify>10%</Verify> TDS (₹5,000) and pay the landlord ₹45,000, depositing ₹5,000 with the government.
