TAN
Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number
Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a unique ten-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department to individuals or businesses who are responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source on behalf of the government.
Where it appears in practice
Mandatory for all entities deducting TDS or collecting TCS. Penalty of <Verify>₹10,000</Verify> applies for failing to quote TAN.
A worked example
A company pays a contractor ₹1,00,000. They must deduct TDS and deposit it. To do this, they need a TAN.
