HSN
Harmonized System of Nomenclature
The Harmonized System of Nomenclature is an internationally accepted, standardized system of names and numbers used to classify traded products. Under GST, it determines the applicable tax rate for goods.
Where it appears in practice
Mandatory on B2B tax invoices. Small businesses with turnover up to <Verify>₹5 Crores</Verify> need a 4-digit code, others need 6 digits.
A worked example
You sell roasted coffee beans. You look up the HSN code 0901, which tells you the correct GST rate to charge on your invoice.
