Form 26AS

Form 26AS

Form 26AS (Annual Tax Statement) Form 26AS is a consolidated annual tax statement that records all taxes deducted at source (TDS), taxes collected at source (TCS), advance taxes paid, and high-value transactions associated with a taxpayer's PAN.

Where it appears in practice

It is the primary document used to verify tax credits before filing an ITR. Discrepancies between Form 26AS and actual income or tax paid can lead to tax notices or rejected refunds.

A worked example

If a bank deducts TDS on fixed deposit interest, this deduction will appear in the taxpayer's Form 26AS, serving as proof that the tax has been deposited with the government.
