Nil Return

Nil Return

Nil Tax Return A Nil Return is a mandatory tax filing submitted when a taxpayer has no financial transactions, tax liability, or input credit to declare for a specific period. It acts as an official declaration to authorities maintaining an active compliance status. Example A freelancer who holds a GST registration takes a break for a month and makes no sales or purchases. They must still file a GSTR-3B as a Nil Return by the deadline (VERIFY: 20th of the next month) to avoid late fees. When it matters in practice Filing is compulsory even without business activity. Missing the deadline attracts daily late fees (VERIFY: ₹20 per day) and can eventually lead to the suspension or cancellation of the tax registration.
